Summary Description of Project
One of most challenging new Church interiors we have completed is St Mary Magdalen Church, Media PA. Working with several diverse elements we were able to synthesize what one prominent Monsignor in the Philadelphia Archdiocese called …”the finest new church built in 75 years”.
UNUSUAL FEATURES AND DESIGN CHALLENGES
The Church was built from the architect’s plans that called for a plain, contemporary, open and airy environment found in many recently constructed Churches The pastor and the parish building committee wanted a place of worship that reflected the noble elaborate style of the mini cathedrals that were the parish churches built by the European immigrants in the late 1800’s and early 20 th century. They were committed to keeping the Eucharist as the central dominant component of the church to emphasize the belief that the Eucharist should be the center of the life of every Catholic. To honor this commitment we designed the sanctuary with the tabernacle as the central focus. Using Crema Marfil marble with its multicolored hues of rose pink, golden beige and blush wine red we were able to complement the majestic 20 foot stained glass window taken from a recently closed Catholic Church that was built in 1893. The marble was used to create a portico that frames and cradles the tabernacle. This large strong mass of marble is tempered and balanced by the peaked roof and harmonious colors that blend with the stained glass windows and mosaic frame background of the tabernacle shrine. Indeed the stained glass window serves as the capstone to the marble construction that harkens back to the Old Testament description of the Holy of Holies.
The Venetian mosaic background is a starburst effect with the tabernacle as the center point. The mosaic features a 24k white gold center that is surrounded by 14 different shades of 24K gold leaf so that any ambient light in the church is immediately drawn to the tabernacle shrine. Upon entering the church your eyes are drawn directly to the Eucharist.
The tabernacle is a fitting House for the Lord. It was hand crafted in our studio in Spain and features hand chased engraving with fine multicolored cloisonne fire enameling set in polished bronze with silver reposse.
Another feature of the project is the finished art depicted throughout the Church. Faux modeling, stenciling and tromp d’oeil were just some of the techniques that were used as in an 18 th Century Church.
