Cardinal O'Hara High School
Springfield, PA
The Grotto of Our Lady at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, Pennsylvania, provides a peaceful place for students to pray, reflect, and grow in their devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
When John Francis O’Hara was named a bishop by Pope Pius XII on December 11, 1939, he chose the motto, “Following her you will not go astray,” a quote attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux that reflects his deep devotion to Mary, the Mother of God. It is fitting that a school bearing Cardinal O’Hara’s name would continue this devotion as an essential part of its spiritual identity.
Constructed from natural stone, the grotto features a recessed arched niche housing a statue of Our Lady, crowned by a simple cross. Its substantial stonework and timeless form create a quiet place for prayer, reflection, and contemplation amid the daily life of the school.
More than an architectural feature, the grotto offers students a tangible invitation to deepen their relationship with Our Lady and turn to her for guidance and intercession. Through this sacred space, Cardinal O’Hara High School continues to honor its namesake’s Marian devotion, encouraging each generation of students to make faith and love for the Blessed Virgin Mary a lasting part of their lives.
