The renovation of the Cathedral of St. Mary was the fulfillment of a vision that had remained with Bishop Joseph Cistone since the day of his ordination in this very Cathedral. From the beginning of his episcopal ministry in the Diocese of Saginaw, Bishop Cistone desired to restore the Mother Church of the Diocese, creating a sacred environment that reflected its importance while honoring its rich history and heritage.

Bishop Cistone's confidence in St. Jude Liturgical Arts Studio was built upon a longstanding professional relationship with Mr. Louis DiCocco. While serving in Philadelphia, Bishop Cistone worked alongside St. Jude Liturgical Arts Studio during the restoration of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul under the leadership of Cardinal Justin Rigali. That successful collaboration established the foundation for the transformation of the Cathedral of St. Mary.

A guiding principle throughout the project was respect for the history of the Saginaw community. The region's rich lumber industry shaped both the city and many of the churches throughout the Diocese, making the existing woodwork an important part of the Cathedral's identity. At the same time, Bishop Cistone believed that the sanctuary should incorporate the timeless beauty and permanence of stone, marble, and mosaic, materials that have long been associated with the Church's most sacred spaces.

Working closely with Bishop Cistone, St. Jude Liturgical Arts Studio and its design team created a sanctuary that seamlessly united these traditions. The Blessed Sacrament was returned to a place of prominence at the center of the sanctuary, reinforcing the Eucharist as the spiritual heart of the Cathedral. New marble furnishings, decorative mosaics, and carefully selected architectural details enriched the sanctuary while remaining harmonious with the Cathedral's historic character.

Beyond the sanctuary, St. Jude Liturgical Arts Studio developed a comprehensive decorative painting program that introduced rich color, intricate stenciling, and hand-applied gold leaf throughout the nave. These artistic enhancements highlighted the Cathedral's original architectural features, bringing renewed depth, beauty, and visual unity to the interior while respecting the building's historic design.

The completed renovation transformed the Cathedral of St. Mary into a fitting Mother Church for the Diocese of Saginaw. Today, parishioners and visitors alike are welcomed into a sacred space that honors its past while inspiring future generations, a Cathedral that stands as a lasting testament to faith, craftsmanship, and the enduring beauty of Catholic sacred art and architecture.
